During this weeks course work we learnt about a great online game that teaches algebra in a fun and exciting new way. It’s called Dragon Box and I love it!! When I was in school and learning algebra we started off with squares and triangles but quickly moved on to numbers and letters. While I did learn algebra well, this game would certainly have made it all so much for fun.
The creator of Dragon Box, Jean-Baptiste Huynh, talks about his educational game in this video. One of the things that really stood out to me in the video was him saying, “The best way to approach technology is by asking, how do I us this in the best possible way?” This is something that we as teachers need to constantly be thinking about. We can’t just look at a game that looks fun and will get our students engaged, we need to focus on how it will further their learning and what benefits the technology has to their education.
He also quoted Alan Kay in the video, who said, “The best way to predict the future is to invent it.” Obviously not everyone can create educational apps for teaching algebra, but there are definitely things we can implement and include in our classroom that will help to shape the future.
